THE
CONCEPT OF HIYANG
It
is a fact that there are certain Filipino words which does not
have equivalent word in the English language, just like the word
hiyang. We always here this word just like in advertisement “
hiyang sa shampoo” , hiyang sa gamut which if translated
literally, that the application or the intake of substance has
produced a positive effect on the patient or the person leading
to wellbeing.
But the application
of the term hiyang is also very much applicable when it comes
to food, loosely it may be equivalent to allergies to the intake
of a particular nutrient or food substance. It may be viewed on
different levels, it could be at individual, familial or racial.
It may also be acquired or genetic. It may be a subtle or silent
type, and remains unsuspected until complications set in, or may
be symptomatic at the very start of the exposure to the allergens.
From my clinical
experience for the Filipinoes I certainly believe that the most
common foods we are not so hiyang with are: dairy products, oatmeal
and wheat bread, I have seen so many patients that by simply minimizing
to the extent of avoiding these kind of foods on their diet, health
improvement is achieved efficiently. This is very much applicable
to patients suffering from any form of chronic diseases, which
includes, diabetes, hypertension, asthma and allergies, cancer,
heart disease and other forms of chronic degenerative diseases
which are so rampant these days.
Unfortunately many Filipinoes are so influenced by the mass media
that the above said foods are “ health foods “ and
are being distributed by big multinational companies who import
these products from temperate countries, like America, Australia,
New Zealand and Europe. Well it could be a health food for those
people living in those temperate countries, but not for Filipinoes
living in a tropical environment.
A good example are dairy products, which includes milk, cheese,
chocolate, ice cream and pastries. Dairy are compacting or heating
type of food which is good for those living in the temperate countries
to warm up their general body temperature. But in a tropical country
like the Phillipiines it is already warm and humid and additional
heat from the dairy will not favor our health. Proof are from
the studies it says that 80% of Filipinoes upon maturity do not
produce anymore the lactase enzyme which is required to digest
dairy products. From clinical perspective many Filipinoes do suffer
from gas or bloating, produce more mucous or phlegm or have sinus
attack whenever they take dairy products. On television they can
keep on advertising that oatmeal can lower cholesterol, yet I
have seen so many patient that despite daily breakfast of oatmeal,
non-intake of fatty or fried foods and daily intake of anti-cholesterol
medications yet their blood cholesterol level remains high. And
lastly for wheat bread intake, bloating or abdominal gas up to
irritable bowel condition may so result.
But here we are talking about the majority
of Filipinoes, by race we are n ot so hiyang to these kind of
food, but instead we can have more of our natural food, which
may be rice instead of oatmeal, tropical fruits instead of milk
and camote or root crops instead of wheat bread..
Unfortunately, these concept
has never been subjected to scientific studies, but based mainly
from my readings and experience with my patient on the clinic.
But I would say it is still worth trying, anyway these are just
foods not to take so it will even help your budget and your
body for these is always part of the cleansing program that
BioVitale gives to each patient. ( to be continued on the next
